EPM (ECCM)/SATURN for Eurofighter Typhoon

To offer maximum protection of the communication link against hostile jamming, the VHF/UHF transceivers of the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft contain the latest NATO technology of EPM (ECCM) (Electronic Protection Measures) called SATURN (Second Generation of Antijam Tactical UHF Radio for NATO). The SATURN radio covers the UHF frequency band from 225 MHz to 400 MHz and provides clear and encrypted voice transmission/reception in the following modes:

  • Conventional AM mode
  • EPM (ECCM) HAVE QUICK
  • EPM (ECCM) SATURN

The VHF frequency band from 108 MHz to 156 MHz for air traffic control is provided for non-EPM (ECCM) operation. To digitize the speech, 16 kbit/s delta modulation is integrated for encrypted transmission and SATURN mode. The control and data interface of the SATURN radio is implemented by a bus in accordance with STANAG 3838 (MILSTD-1553B) and as a fiber-optic bus to STANAG 3910 (EF2000). The overall control is software-based and can thus easily be adapted to customers' requirements.
