Rohde & Schwarz Announces set of Full Measurement Solutions for 700 MHz Applications
Columbia, MD —
The auction, which began January 24, covers blocks of spectrum between 698 and 806 MHz, and is one of the most interesting since the FCC instituted the auction process in 1994. The 700 MHz region offers the ability to cover greater distances with less power than can be achieved at higher frequencies, which potentially makes network deployment less expensive. In addition, this is first auction in which the winning bidders in one of the spectrum blocks (the C block) will have to allow any device or application (rather than just those dictated by the spectrum licensee) that conforms with their specifications as well as FCC rules to be used on their networks. This precedent-setting requirement may prove to be the beginning of an “open platform” trend in the wireless industry.
The auction also pits major carriers against newcomers and potentially a host of new applications from video and audio feeds to high-speed broadband internet access that rival cable and DSL, and less-expensive mobile phone networks. The communication technologies they employ may ultimately run the gamut from LTE (the successor to GSM/UMTS), to WiMAX, the 1xEV-DO enhancement to the CDMA2000 standard, and others as well.
Regardless of the networks and technologies ultimately deployed, the new services will create substantial demand for communication test equipment that delivers high performance in the 700 MHz band. Unlike some competitive measurement solutions,
