Bayerischer Rundfunk and T-Systems award order for broadcasting equipment

DVB-T starting off in Bavaria with transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz

München, Jan 18, 2005 - On 31 May 2005, digital TV will be launched in Bavaria with transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz. To this effect, Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation) and T-Systems have placed an order with Rohde & Schwarz to supply digital terrestrial transmitters. The total order volume amounts to 21 high-power transmitters, with output power ranging from 1.7 kW to 9.3 kW. A DVB-H pilot project will be started in Munich at the same time. The purpose of this project is to test TV signal transmission to mobile terminals.

The transmitters for the new digital terrestrial TV network will be installed on Wendelstein mountain in the Bavarian Alps, the Munich Olympic Tower and on the Nuremberg and Dillberg telecommunication towers. This will provide coverage for the densely populated areas of Munich and Nuremberg as well as for parts of Upper Bavaria and Swabia. When the digital transmitters go on air on Wendelstein mountain in mid-2005, no more analog programs will be broadcast from there. Fifty years ago, Rohde & Schwarz supplied the analog equipment for this station, and now it will accompany the broadcasting station into the era of digital TV.

Six transmitters are planned to be installed at each broadcasting station, except for Dillberg, where three transmitters are planned. Each transmitter operates as a multiplexer that transports a packet of four programs over a common TV channel. A total of 24 programs will be transmitted digitally, three of which are reserved for testing digital additional services, mainly in DVB-H format. Previously, with analog TV, a maximum of 13 programs could be received via an antenna.

In the DVB-H pilot project, Rohde & Schwarz combines its expertise and know-how in the fields of mobile radio and sound and TV broadcasting. This pilot project is considered a pioneering feat of all those involved.

The transmitters will be delivered by the end of February 2005, and installation will be completed by the beginning of May 2005.
