The increasing demand for naval communications – notably in the HF band – has led to the development of new concepts in recent years, which must also take into account the limited space for antennas onboard ships. A comparison with other navies shows that the Royal Netherland Navy has a great deal of experience in the field of HF broadband systems. This experience was put to use in the design and definition of the shipboard antenna system when planning of the Amphibious Transport Ship/Landing Platform Dock (ATS/LPD) was started in spring 1992 as a part of a joint Dutch-Spanish project.
