Installation and Maintenance with R&S Cable Rider ZPH

Installation & maintenance

Install and maintain your BTS with ease of use and high efficiency

Network operators are investing heavily in expanding network capacity and introducing new technologies. The number of newly deployed BTS installations is increasing. The situation becomes even more complex when a site consists of more than one technology from more than one infrastructure supplier.

Before going live with these installations, it is crucial to check if the components work as expected as a system and that the technicians did not make any mistakes. However, it is not enough to perform these measurements only when the BTS is deployed.

Every time an operator experiences a drop in OSS KPIs, it is necessary to service the affected sectors in order to narrow down the potential error source so that the technician doesn’t end up hunting ghosts. You always start with classic installation measurements before continuing with optimization and external interference hunting.

Installation and maintenance measurements have become even more complicated since the rollout of LTE. Before it was simple because you just needed to focus on return loss. Today, we have a second value that is important because it creates interference in the uplink – passive intermodulation (PIM). The good news is that you can optimize your BTS systematically. First, you optimize the return loss with a cable and antenna analyzer as usual and then you optimize PIM with a PIM tester.

Speeding up reflection measurements

Reflection measurements are a common way of assessing antenna system performance as you can read in this application card. When a minimum amount of the transmitted signal is reflected, it indicates that the transmission energy can reach the intended coverage. Undesired high reflection causes the system to be inefficient and can damage components. Reflection measurements can be expressed in terms of return loss, VSWR and reflection coefficient.
