Power Semiconductors: Shaping the future power grid - Performance and Reliability for future decades

Presented by Tobias Keller, Hitachi Energy

Power Semiconductors with voltages 1200 V and above and being able to handle kW or even MW are a crucial part of our power grids now and even more in the future. They enable the integration of renewable energy sources (e.g. solar and wind) and interconnect power grids with FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) and HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current).

All these applications require the highest performance, highest reliability and a lifetime of 30-40 years. Comprehensive tests enable new generations of power semiconductors (Si & SiC) to be optimized and capable for such demanding and critical tasks. This keynote will focus on the challenges of grid applications and the qualification of such power semiconductors.
