Millimeter Wave Measurements

RF engineers are increasingly confronted with the task of characterizing devices operating in the mmWave range. The vector network analyzer (VNA) R&S ZNA, along with R&S or RPG ZC<xxx> mmWave converters, provides a broad range of measurement solutions fulfilling this task. This application note is intended to provide help for choosing the right measuring instruments and accessories, interconnecting them correctly, setting up the instruments, calibrating them and finally obtaining measurement results. Both linear and nonlinear measurement quantities are covered. In both categories, one further distinguishes between devices that do not change the frequency of the input signal (e.g. transmission lines, attenuators, amplifiers) and those that do (e.g. mixers, frequency multipliers). Generally, the complexity of setup and calibration is higher in the latter case. The ZNA user interface is designed to assist the user with defining the wanted measurement quantities and their associated parameters like source power, LO frequency, and tone distance for two-tone measurements. It shows the needed setup schematically and proposes how to calibrate this setup including all necessary steps. Many common pitfalls lurking when calibration is completely done manually are avoided by automatic compilation of the calibration.Following this concept, the chapters of this application note first give a brief description of the characterization quantities treated in the chapter, then outline the measurement setup, take a look at calibration and provide examples of measurement results as they appear on the ZNA display.

ESD generator pulse verification using high-performance oscilloscopes

Electrostatic discharge is a risk to all electronic equipment, making compliance with standards such as IEC 61000-4-2 essential. The standards dictate both testing procedures and the required ESD generator performance. Prior to use, ESD generator output must be verified with a calibrated target and a highperformance oscilloscope for accurate current pulse generation in line with the standard. Lab class instruments are ideal for verification measurements thanks to their superior measurement capabilities and dedicated ESD measurement functions. The solution lets users efficiently verify and document the ESD generator.

Sub-THz (6G) Communication Signal Generation and Analysis

The upcoming sixth generation (6G) of mobile communication systems is expected to push technological boundaries by enabling ultra-high data rates and extremely low latency. It aims to support a wide range of innovative use cases, typically categorized into four domains: Network-Enabled Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Multisensory Extended Reality, Integrated Sensing and Communications, and Personalized User Experiences. Among the various promising enablers, sub-THz communications have emerged as a technology candidate for the 6G and beyond era, offering the potential for terabit-per-second data rates to meet the extreme performance demands of these applications. To realize this vision, operation in sub-THz frequency bands is part of ongoing research projects. This application note presents a practical approach to generate sub-THz communication signals for 6G based on using DFT-s-OFDM (Discrete Fourier Transform Spread OFDM) modulation. The implementation is realized on a flexible, GUI-controlled testbed built with Rohde & Schwarz instruments, including the SFI100A vector signal generator, FSW signal and spectrum analyzer and external RF frontends.A custom-built graphical user interface (GUI) coordinates all equipment and enables rapid prototyping of communication signal configurations, control of signal generation and measurement automation. This application note serves as a guide for researchers and engineers looking to evaluate or generate future communication signals in the sub-THz domain using commercial measurement equipment.

AREG800A Scenario Generation Using Python

The R&S®AREG800A has a scenario player built in for replaying predefined, dynamic scenarios. Scenarios come in the form of binary files containing a sequence of timestamped ASAM Open Simulation Interface (OSI) messages describing the radar objects that should be simulated. The R&S®AREG800A can replay these scenario files and provides convenient playback and remote-control functions, as well as automatic mapping of simulated objects to the connected RF frontends. This application note presents background information and details about how to create said scenarios using Python and how to replay them on a R&S®AREG800A. Examples for scripting dynamic scenario in Python are provided as well.

Generation of Graphics and Tables from template settings with R&S® ELEKTRA

In electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test applications, measurements are performed according to predefined template settings to ensure consistency and repeatability. These measurements are typically repeated multiple times across different frequencies and accessory positions, which are also defined within the template. Since both accessory positions and types can significantly influence the results, users often need to visualize and compare data across a range of configurations. Template settings streamline the generation of graphics and tables, allowing efficient analysis across frequencies, accessory positions, and types. This application note describes the different template settings in R&S®ELEKTRA related to graphics and tables. It also illustrates how the final outputs, presented as tables and graphics, show the measurement results for different configurations.

I/Q streaming of large waveform files to a Rohde & Schwarz vector signal generator

Testing receivers with the most realistic radar, communications or GNSS signals often involves waveform files that are too large for the internal ARB memory in vector signal generators. Scenarios lasting minutes or hours entail files with terabytes of I/Q data. The R&S®SMW-K508 or R&S®SMM-K508 I/Q streaming options allow for such large waveform files by streaming them via Ethernet from a PC to the R&S®SMW200A or R&S®SMM100A vector signal generators.

Symmetric Supply with R&S® Power Supplies

Analog circuits like operational amplifiers often require a symmetric supply with supply ground, positive rail and negative rail. The supply ground is the reference for analog signals in the circuit. The channels in R&S® multi-channel power supplies are galvanically completely floating against each other as well as against safety earth. This provides the maximum flexibility for connecting channels in parallel or in series to provide increased current or voltage output, or for split or symmetric supply. This application note describes how to configure two outputs for a symmetric supply, providing both positive and negative rails. The instructions apply also to both discontinued and future multi-channel models of R&S® power supplies.

Accelerate automotive ADAS validation with hardware in the loop

As vehicles integrate more ADAS & Automated Driving (AD) functions, precise radar validation is essential for safety features like AEBSS and SAE Level 2 & 3 automation. Simulation-based testing offers flexibility but lacks real-world accuracy, while road testing is costly and inconsistent. Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) solutions bridge this gap, enabling real-time radar sensor evaluation with high repeatability.Rohde & Schwarz supports this with the R&S®AREG800A radar echo generator and R&S®QAT100 antenna array, simulating dynamic targets in angle, range, velocity, and size, and integrating via Open Simulation Interface (OSI). With cutting-edge radar test solutions, R&S ensures safer, more reliable ADAS/AD systems. This educational note explores the current state of closed-loop testing for radar-based hardware, focusing on how Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems enable realistic validation of automotive radar sensors. It highlights key driving scenarios that HIL must address and demonstrates how the R&S®AREG800A radar echo generator and R&S®QAT100 antenna array support closed-loop validation.
