5G Broadcast is one of the key themes at NAB 2019 in Las Vegas, April 6-11. With a conference stream devoted to the new broadband mobile broadcast technology, a revolutionary solution that allows broadcasters to deliver content direct to smartphones is demonstrated on the Rohde & Schwarz booth, SL6405, South Lower Hall.

At NAB 2019, Rohde & Schwarz will present a solution for the future transmission of media content with 5G Broadcast. Broadcasters will be able to reach smartphone users directly. By using a high-power high-tower (HPHT) network topology as an overlay for mobile networks, transmission will be significantly more efficient and cost-effective than before.

In recent years, media consumption has increasingly shifted to smartphones and other mobile devices. Reaching billions of smartphones will be the future of broadcasting in line with ATSC and 3GPP.

As a part of the Bavarian research project 5G TODAY, Rohde & Schwarz is investigating large-scale TV broadcasts over an HPHT 5G Broadcast field trial near Munich. The project is also supported by Kathrein, Telefónica Germany and broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (who is providing two HPHT sites near Munich for the field trial).

Using the HPHT concept will allow broadcasters to distribute video over 5G networks with all the advantages of classic broadcasting such as high quality levels, as known from HDTV broadcasting, low latency live content, as well as enormous spectrum efficiency and wide coverage. This will enable broadcasters to bring their valuable assets for efficient distribution of high-quality video into the future 5G ecosystem.

Content providers will also benefit from 5G Broadcast because it offers their customers better quality of service and better quality of experience.

With a cell radius of more than 60 km in each transmission area, 5G Broadcast offers better and broader coverage for transmitting media content, even in rural areas. This reduces necessary infrastructure investments since large areas can be covered with fewer transmitters.

The company will highlight the advantages of this technology at the Rohde & Schwarz booth and will demonstrate the first end-to-end solution for LTE/5G Broadcast. The 5G Broadcast experts will speak at the Broadcast Engineering and Information Technology (BEIT) conference and discuss this topic on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 9.00 a.m, room N258.

Destination 5G conference

As part of NAB Show 2019, Destination 5G offers three days of conference sessions on 5G Broadcast, looking at business models, understanding the technology, how it will work in sports, entertainment and immersive applications, as well as how the 5G infrastructure will develop for terrestrial, satellite and smartphones. The Destination 5G sessions take place on booth SU13306, South Upper Hall.

5G TODAY research project

Under the lead of IRT, the 5G TODAY project partners Kathrein and Rohde & Schwarz are investigating large-scale TV broadcasting in FeMBMS mode. The project is supported by the associated partners Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR) and Telefónica.

Two high-performance Rohde & Schwarz transmitters for 100 kilowatts of ERP have been installed at Wendelstein and Ismaning in Bavaria. The transmitters will form a Single Frequency Network (SFN) and enable mobile and portable reception in the greater Munich area and on the main traffic routes between Munich and Rosenheim for further research purposes.

The 5G TODAY project is funded by the Bavarian Research Foundation. Under the leadership of the Institute for Broadcast Technology (IRT), project partners Kathrein and Rohde & Schwarz are investigating large-scale TV broadcasts under the scope of LTE/5G Broadcast.
