Sinclair Broadcast Group to deploy 100 ATSC 3.0-ready transmitters in US

Over 100 Rohde & Schwarz high-power ATSC 3.0-ready TV transmitters are being deployed across the USA, after a new deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group.

As part of the ongoing Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Repack, Sinclair Broadcast Group, one of the largest owners of television stations in the United States, has chosen to deploy over 100 Rohde & Schwarz high-power ATSC 3.0-ready TV transmitters for the broadcast operation of 90 TV stations nationwide.

Sinclair’s transmitter model of choice is the future-ready R&S THUevo liquid-cooled transmitter. It offers an easy path to ATSC 3.0 and energy efficiency values of up to 43 percent for ATSC. Compared to conventional transmitters, the R&S THU9evo can save up to 50% of energy costs (in Doherty operation), while offering the highest power density on the market. The result is a reduction in energy consumption, which minimizes network operator costs.

Spectrum Repacking

As part of the broadcast spectrum incentive auction, the FCC is authorized to repack the television band by assigning television stations to new channels. This process poses significant challenges for the broadcast industry. Repacked television stations will need to complete channel moves. Radio stations and non-repacked television stations may also be affected if they are located on or near a tower with a repacked television station.

On April 13, 2018, the FCC released a public notice announcing the results of the auction and outlining which stations will be moving along with their new channel assignments. Nearly 1,000 stations will be moved to new channels. The release of this notice also starts a 90-day shot clock on submitting applications for repack construction and reimbursement estimates. The first station moves began in November 2018.

ATSC 3.0

The Advanced Television Systems Committee is defining the future of television with the ATSC 3.0 next-generation broadcast standard. ATSC is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards for digital television. The ATSC’s 150-plus member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries.

ATSC 3.0 allows broadcasters to provide new services to viewers. It offers a flexible and more efficient physical layer, mobility, ultra-high definition and high dynamic range images, new solutions for immersive and personalized audio, an all IP-based transport system, hybrid broadcast/broadband services, advanced emergency advisories and incorporation of new user technologies such as interactivity.

The ATSC 3.0 suite of standards has been released, and the FCC has approved the voluntary implementation of Next Gen TV broadcasting using ATSC 3.0. A number of initial deployments are underway to explore system performance and new opportunities for broadcasters, manufacturers and viewers.

New president for ATSC board

In a further move that boosts ATSC 3.0 preparation, Madeleine Noland has been named the new president of the ATSC board. Effective May 15, she will succeed Mark Richer, who in January announced his plan to retire after leading the standards development organization for 20 of its 35 years.

Noland, who is currently senior technology and standards advisor for LG Electronics, chairs the ATSC technology group that oversees the ATSC 3.0 next-generation broadcast standard. Well-known and widely respected for her consensus-building leadership style, Noland has chaired various ATSC 3.0-related specialist groups, ad hoc groups and implementation teams since 2012.
