Tips & tricks: Power electronics – Probing basics

The correct probing equipment and measurement techniques are of crucial importance in order to perform reliable oscilloscope measurements on power electronics. This lecture and hands-on session will help clarify some important parameters and the technical basics of oscilloscope probes. The application focus of this webinar are power electronics. However, the presented concepts are valid for other applications as well.

Attendees of the webinar will learn floating measurement techniques, bandwidth and rise time considerations, common mode rejection ratio, attenuation ratio and noise, offset compensation and current measurements.

Speaker

Dr. Tim Paasch-Colberg is a product manager at Rohde & Schwarz and is responsible for oscilloscopes and probes. Power electronics are one of the main applications he focuses on.

Previously, he was a marketing director at a company that manufactured research lasers that were used for quantum optics, biophotonics and precise measurements.

Tim got his PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, while working on ultra-fast carrier dynamics in solid states.

Dr. Mathias Hellwig develops, verifies and supports test and measurement solutions for time-domain applications at Rohde & Schwarz. His focus is on testing digital designs. He achieved deep technical expertise in theory and practice when finishing his PhD in ADC design at the Ruhr-University Bochum and while working on system architectures in various roles before joining Rohde & Schwarz in 2012.
