Solutions for power integrity testing

Stable and clean power rail signals are the basis for reliable performance of electronic devices. Power rail voltages are getting smaller and tolerances are decreasing, making it much more difficult to accurately measure power rails. In the past, any oscilloscope could measure ripple on standard 5 V rails with 10% tolerance because the 500 mV requirement was well above the noise level of the scope. In contrast, the new requirements are challenging for power rail measurements. Performing an accurate ripple measurement on a 1 V rail with 2 % tolerance, for example, is difficult on most oscilloscopes. Rohde & Schwarz oscilloscopes support these tasks with a variety of accessories and analysis functions.

Power integrity probing

The active R&S®RT-ZPR20 and R&S®RT-ZPR40 power rail probes are designed to measure small AC characteristics of DC rails. They only add about 10 % to the noise of the oscilloscope and provide a built-in offset of ±60 V, making it possible to exploit the maximum oscilloscope vertical sensitivity for lower noise and more of the scope’s ADC bits. In combination with Rohde & Schwarz oscilloscopes, it is an ideal solution for fast and accurate power integrity measurements.

Verifying power integrity for DDR memories

Ripple and noise on the power distribution network negatively impact clock and data jitter of embedded devices that use DDR memory. This directly affects data transfer performance. The power supply voltages of embedded designs with DDR memories therefore need to be qualified for reliable operation. Whereas DDR3 memories tolerated 75 mV (Vpp) ripple, this tolerance decreased to only 60 mV (Vpp) for DDR4 memories. Most likely, it will decrease further in the future. This requires low-noise measurement solutions for power integrity testing.
