Rohde & Schwarz makes the R&S SDTR software defined tactical radio even more user-friendly

The state-of-the-art R&S SDTR software defined tactical radio provides high data rate, jam-resistant communications in network centric operations. A new, external control unit now makes the radio even easier to operate – also when driving through rough terrain.

The launch of the R&S SDTR from Rohde & Schwarz marked the first milestone of a new generation of software defined radios. Designed as an open platform on the basis of the software communications architecture (SCA), it can use both SCA-based and legacy waveforms.

While developing the R&S SDTR, a primary objective for Rohde & Schwarz was to make the radio easy to configure and operate to best help users when carrying out their missions. This is why the company has now added an external control unit to its R&S SDTR portfolio. Its modern design deliberately resembles that of conventional, intuitive control units used in everyday life. The straightforward menus give users all key information at a glance. The size and layout of the keys ensure operability even under difficult field conditions. The control unit can control up to three vehicular tactical radios of the R&S SDTR and R&S M3TR families simultaneously.

Both the control unit for the R&S SDTR and the radio itself are designed for use under tough conditions. The radio’s size, weight, ventilation and shock resistance are optimized for use in vehicles and on semi-mobile platforms. Integrated high-performance filters make it possible to place antennas as close as one meter apart without the radio lines interfering with each other. The R&S SDTR covers a frequency range from 30 MHz to 512 MHz without any additional equipment.

Missions always involve different phases and diverse threats. This is why Rohde & Schwarz offers a portfolio of network-capable, high data rate waveforms. Depending on the required range, data rate and jamming resistance, the optimum waveform can be immediately selected networkwide during the mission. Even waveforms from other providers can be ported to the radio, ensuring unlimited interoperability. IP capability enables easy, seamless integration into existing IP networks.

The R&S SDTR provides users with the secure, reliable communications they are accustomed to from Rohde & Schwarz. Very fast frequency hopping methods ensure the best possible resistance to jamming, and the use of highly secure encryption methods provides protection against tampering, reconnaissance and tapping.
