Dual Cell – HSDPA (DC-HSDPA)

HSPA on top of WCDMA networks has been a true success story around the globe. Meanwhile all WCDMA networks have been upgraded to support at least HSDPA operation. Furthermore a number of enhancements known as HSPA+ features have been added in 3GPP Releases 8 up to 10. The aim is to increase peak data rates, to improve spectral efficiency and to reduce latency in the system. One of the features added in 3GPP Release 8 is DC-HSDPA, i.e. the operation of two adjacent HSDPA downlink carriers (5 MHz each) in combination with a single uplink carrier. Peak data rates applying this feature reach 42 Mbit/s in downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s in uplink direction. By the end of 2012 more than 100 operators have commercially launched DC-HSDPA services.

There is one signaling channel (HS-SCCH) in each of the two downlink carriers, i.e. scheduling flexibility in terms of different transport formats depending on CQI feedback is maintained on each carrier. Dual Cell HSDPA is activated via HS-SCCH orders (layer 1) as already used for other HSPA+ features like continuous packet connectivity (CPC). One uplink HS-DPCCH acknowledges the data packets on each of the two downlink carriers.

Testing the DC-HSDPA feature affects a number of scenarios including infrastructure, mobile devices and chipsets. Primarily, maximum data rates need to be verified in the lab as well as in real life operation. Additionally components of both base stations and mobile devices need to be tested on RF and baseband level. Rohde & Schwarz offers a wide variety of test solutions for DC-HSDPA.
