For many decades, radio and television signals have been transmitted to receivers via terrestrial RF channels in the VHF and UHF bands, via cable TV systems and via satellites. With the advent of smartphones, user behavior in mobile communications systems is changing from pure phone and SMS services to using smartphones as general purpose communications tools for receiving radio services and viewing videos via streaming services. Bandwidth-conserving broadcast modes for these services have been incorporated directly in the recent 4G and 5G mobile communications standards. This training course provides an overview of this new mobile broadcast technology and discusses applications and possibilities.
