3GPP defines the Radio Frequency (RF) conformance test methods and requirements for 5G NR Base Stations (BS) in the technical specifications TS 38.141. This application note describes how all mandatory RF transmitter tests (TS 38.141-1, chapter 6), according to Release 16, can be performed quickly and conveniently with signal or spectrum analyzers from Rohde & Schwarz by either choosing manual operation or a remote control approach. Moreover, some test cases require additional signal generation equipment from Rohde & Schwarz.In Addition, a new Python software library comes with this application note to enable the remote control approach of base station testing. This example requires the RsInstrument module which can be found on pypi.org or installed via 'pip' and is provided as is.

The R&S ® AREG100A automotive radar echo generator is a versatile instrument for stimulating radars in the 24 GHz ISM band and in the 77 GHz and 79 GHz frequency bands. Highlights include an OTA test solution with frontend modules specifically for the 5G FR2 range and a solution for speed-optimized tests of 5G base stations. Both are ideal for use in production. There is also a new, innovative test solution that allows developers to perform cross-channel measurements with up to 4x4 MIMO in the FR1 range.

Rohde & Schwarz demonstrates powerful test solutions for 5G NR base stations at MWC 2019Rohde & Schwarz will present its test solutions for 5G base stations and the associated massive MIMO antenna arrays and amplifiers at Mobile World Congress 2019. Highlights include signal analysis and signal generation solutions for 5G base station tests in the millimeterwave range and an innovative OTA test solution. It is the first solution worldwide that allows the far-field properties of 5G antenna arrays to be characterized at short distances. A cloud based test solution for automated 5G production tests will also be on display.
While the target application dictates the RF requirements, efficiency and cost are the main differentiating factors for RF power amplifier solutions. Various techniques can be used to improve efficiency, e.g. technologies such as GaN with increased energy density.
