The training course "Spectrum Monitoring Fundamentals" introduces the participants to the basic principles of radio spectrum monitoring and highlights the main topics of the operational tasks given by the ITU Spectrum Monitoring Handbook (Revision 2011).

The course focuses on signal environment fundamentals with radio wave propagation and modulation methods. Radio wave propagation as well as anomalous propagation and its effects are introduced and described; required measurement equipment (e.g. antenna, receiver, direction finder) is explained together with an introduction to operation principles and related methods and algorithms. Based upon these fundamentals, some main spectrum monitoring measurement procedures are explained. References to respective chapters in the ITU Handbook on Spectrum Monitoring and related ITU recommendations and reports are highlighted to explain the meaning of ITU compliant measurements.
