EBU predicts first uses of 5G Broadcast in content production

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has predicted that the first use of 5G technology in the broadcast and media industry will be in content production, with large-scale 5G Broadcast to the general public likely to take longer. At the same time, the 5G market is expected to boom within the next few years.

For media distribution at scale, the EBU believes that cellular 5G alone is unlikely to replace existing broadcasting networks soon. It could, however, become a useful complement to existing infrastructures. In addition, the EBU believes that some of the first practical use-cases for 5G technologies in media will be in content production. This may include not only the use of public 5G networks, but also the deployment of private 5G networks in venues.

The EBU is investigating setups that would add broadcast capabilities to 5G, and others that would provide a better fit for the lower population density and larger geographic footprint of rural areas, such as satellite-based 5G, or high-powered 5G base stations installed in existing broadcast towers.

5G TODAY research project

Under the lead of IRT, the 5G TODAY project partners Kathrein and Rohde & Schwarz are investigating large-scale TV broadcasting in FeMBMS mode. The project is supported by the associated partners Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR) and Telefónica.

Two high-performance Rohde & Schwarz transmitters for 100 kilowatts of ERP have been installed at Wendelstein and Ismaning in Bavaria. The transmitters will form a Single Frequency Network (SFN) and enable mobile and portable reception in the greater Munich area and on the main traffic routes between Munich and Rosenheim for further research purposes.

5G adoption likely to be faster than 4G

Adoption of 5G cellular technology globally will happen faster than that of 4G, according to a new forecast by technology research firm CCS Insight. Connections to 5G networks will surpass 1 billion in 2022, taking a year less than 4G did to clear this milestone, before reaching 2.8 billion in 2025.

CCS Insight said that several mobile operators are laying claim to launching the world’s first 5G service. AT&T and Verizon in the US, KT Telecom in South Korea and Swisscom in Switzerland, among others, have all taken their first steps in the commercial deployment of 5G.

Many new 5G networks will arrive in the second half of 2019, and especially in 2020, when practically all major operators in Western Europe, North America, China, Japan and other advanced markets of Asia–Pacific will roll out 5G services. Operators will wish to move to 5G to take advantage of capacity gains and lower costs for serving smartphone users, whose appetite for mobile data is quickly growing.

5G smartphone sales to surge

Following initial sales of 37 million first-generation 5G smartphones this year, worldwide shipments will surge to 120 million devices in 2020, IHS Markit forecasts. This rollout will be the fastest ever for a new wireless generation, generating six times more unit shipments than previous record-holder LTE, over a similar timeframe. Benefitting from strong industry momentum and alignment, global 5G smartphone shipments will continue to rise in the coming years, reaching over 525 million devices in 2023.
