Directional, secure communications for contested environments

Modern battlefields are rapidly shifting toward uncrewed platforms. Deploying autonomous aerial, ground and maritime systems dramatically increases survivability and improves situational awareness by delivering far more data for faster, better‑informed decision‑making. At the same time, crewed‑uncrewed teaming places markedly higher demands on the communications network: longer reach, higher‑throughput data links, and stealthy signaling with a low probability of interception and detection (LPI/LPD) are now essential to keep both crewed and uncrewed assets coordinated and secure.

Rohde & Schwarz introduces NEMACS – the networked multipoint array communications system. NEMACS is a comprehensive communications subsystem for military and civil use that directly addresses these emerging market needs.

NEMACS enables:

  • Reliable data exchange in covert operations
  • Seamless integration of crewed and uncrewed systems
  • Real-time decision-making across all domains

NEMACS supports distributed force extension through resilient multilink and MUM-T communications.

Space

NEMACS ensures beyond-line-of-sight connectivity through integrated SATCOM capabilities.

How NEMACS adds value in a scenario

A naval platform detects a target in a contested environment where the adversary is actively jamming and trying to block the spectrum. Despite this heavy jamming, the ship can transmit broadband sensor information via NEMACS to airborne assets.

  • The crewed fighter aircraft receives a wide range of data from the ship, allowing the aircraft to have full target info without needing to transmit its own sensors.
  • The crewed fighter then receives additional sensor data from various uncrewed assets, allowing it to achieve a full target picture and fusion.
  • The crewed fighter coordinates an interception with a nearby UCAV using NEMACS.
  • The UCAV executes the strike.
  • Various uncrewed systems act as relays to maintain connectivity.
  • The fighter aircraft retrogrades to safety while uncrewed assets provide battle damage assessment, streaming high-quality data back to the fighter and the naval platform.

Result: Faster engagement, higher survivability and mission success despite denied communications

Key components of NEMACS
