Brief Description

UMTS High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) networks worldwide are operated in order to increase data rate and capacity for downlink and uplink packet data. While HSDPA was introduced as a Release 5 feature in 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), HSUPA is an important feature of 3GPP Release 6. The combination of HSDPA and HSUPA is often referred to as HSPA (High Speed Packet Access).

However, even with the introduction of HSPA, the evolution of UMTS has not reached its end. HSPA+ brings significant enhancements to 3GPP Release 7, 8, 9 and 10. The objective is to enhance performance of HSPA-based radio networks in terms of spectrum efficiency, peak data rate and latency, and to exploit the full potential of WCDMA operation.

The R&S®SMW-K83 option extends the R&S®SMW-K42 3GPP FDD option to support HSPA and HSPA+.

It allows the simulation of HSUPA and HSDPA physical channels as well as HSDPA H-Sets and HSUPA fixed reference channels (FRC). HSPA+ features such as higher-order modulation schemes, DC-HSDPA, uplink DTX and extensions for MIMO are also supported.

Furthermore, the R&S®SMW-K83 option provides additional sophisticated functions for base-station and mobile-station testing.

It makes it possible to vary the output power in realtime mode for up to three DPCH in downlink and UE1 in uplink, for example for RX tests on base stations or UEs where closed-loop power control is needed.

In uplink, the output of the FRC HARQ processes can be controlled in realtime using a feedback line (TTL) via which ACKs and NACKs are received in order to fulfill the requirements defined in 3GPP TS 25.141, chapters 8.12 and 8.13.
