Working in the cloud in compliance with data protection laws despite the failure of the Privacy Shield: R&S®Trusted Gate by Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity enables pseudonymization in Microsoft® 365

With a new pseudonymization module, IT security expert prevents data leakage as early as when logging into cloud services from cloud providers not based in the EU. For companies and public authorities, this makes data protection-compliant, collaborative work possible despite the Schrems II ruling.

Munich, March 11, 2021 - On 16 July 2020, the European Court of Justice declared the Privacy Shield data protection agreement invalid. The decision makes clear that European data in the USA and also in many other non-European countries is not safe from access by third parties if local laws legitimize such access. What many people are not aware of is that even logging in to services whose location is in the USA can lead to a data leak and accordingly bring legal consequences.

With the new pseudonymization module, Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity enables Microsoft 365 users to work pseudonymously and in compliance with data protection laws, while at the same time complying with all existing workflows. Pseudonymization completely decouples the real user data from Microsoft's Azure Active Directory and thus from Microsoft Teams. Pseudonymization replaces identifiers such as names with pseudonyms. This prevents the unique identification of a person and R&S Trusted Gate does not transmit any personal data that can be processed by the cloud operator. In the local Active Directory, however, the real users with their IDs and respective roles can still be used and are only transmitted to the cloud systems in pseudonymized form. Pseudonymization runs transparently for the user and existing workflows remain with the identities in plain text. With pseudonymization, globally operating companies can comply with worldwide data protection regulations away from the Privacy Shield.

R&S Trusted Gate runs transparently in existing applications, so workflows remain unchanged. A special search function enables secure full-text searches even in encrypted documents.
