5G NTN takes flight

5G non-terrestrial networks evolving towards 6G

Even back in the Nineties and the early days of digital mobile radio, the organizations responsible for developing standards envisaged ubiquitous communication including satellite or airborne based network components. At the time non-terrestrial networks (NTN) went no further than early trials, largely due to commercial reasons.

In the last few years we have seen a tremendous development in the satellite and aerospace community as well as in worldwide wireless communication. With the new work item 5G-NTN in 3GPP, the vision of ubiquitous communication networks including satellite and airborne can become a reality. Connecting satellites from LEO to GEO or airborne base stations (HAPS) to terrestrial ground stations is becoming feasible. Transmission technologies such as beamforming, and 5G numerologies can support reliable connections from mobile devices to stations in high altitude.

In this webinar, we will take a closer look at the current status of how non-terrestrial networks are treated in the 3GPP standardization, what the technical challenges are, what the spectrum allocation could look like, and how to leverage the deployment of NTN capable devices and networks. We cover architecture aspects, RF challenges, and protocol layer details of a 5G network supporting NTN. The webinar concludes with an outlook on the evolution of 5G NTN on the way to 6G.

In this webinar, you will learn more about:

  • 5G NTN technology and use cases
  • RF challenges with NTN
  • NTN architecture aspects
  • Protocol layers and procedures
  • 5G NTN evolving to 6G
