The China Mobile Research Institute and Rohde & Schwarz have joined forces to research and validate joint communication and sensing (JCAS). They plan to use the latest R&S AREG800A automotive radar echo generator from Rohde & Schwarz as an object simulator in a JCAS testing solution, thereby accelerating the research and development of JCAS and readying it for industrialization.

The new R&S RTS radar test system from Rohde & Schwarz simulates driving scenarios for testing radar based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and radar sensors used in autonomously driving cars (AD) entirely over the air. The test solution consists of the new R&S AREG800A automotive radar echo generator as a backend and the R&S QAT100 antenna array as a frontend. Laterally moving objects, i.e. objects approaching from the side, are currently simulated by mechanically moving antennas. The R&S RTS replaces the mechanical movement by electronically switching individual antennas in the frontend on and off. Even objects moving laterally to the car at very high speed can be simulated reliably and reproducibly. The R&S RTS is able to simulate the radial velocity (Doppler shift) and the size (radar cross section) of objects at user configurable – including very small – ranges. Countless objects can be represented by cascading multiple R&S AREG800A backends. The R&S RTS moves tests currently performed on the road to the lab. This allows early error detection and a significant reduction in costs.

Rohde & Schwarz and Vector Informatik are collaborating on closed-loop scenario testing of automotive radar sensors for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD). Coupling the DYNA4 virtual test drive simulation platform from Vector with the latest Rohde & Schwarz radar moving object stimulation system enables powerful verification of safety-critical ADAS functions. These include emergency braking in an integrated hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) environment.

This test solution enables object emulation within the FR2 frequency band, which is one of the frequency bands of interest, by combining the R&S®AREG800A Automotive Radar Echo Generator with the R&S®FE44 External Frontend.

This creates a fast, accurate and efficient test system optimized for production that facilitates the transition from radar sensor development to mass production.

The R&S ATS1500C antenna test system from Rohde & Schwarz offers a new temperature test option and a new feed antenna. These additional features enable temperature-controlled measurements in a wide temperature range as well as parallel access to both polarizations, increasing test efficiency and flexibility. The solution will be shown at EuMW from September 27 to 29, 2022 at booth D18 of the Milano Convention Centre.
