Verify the behavior of Samsung S9 flagship smartphones in real-life conditions and optimize network performance

March 28, 2018

Rohde & Schwarz mobile network testing is staying on top of the latest market developments by supporting Samsung’s new flagship smartphones. The integration of Samsung S9 smartphones into R&S®ROMES4 lets users verify their behavior in real-life conditions. This enables operators to optimize their network's performance accordingly.

For network operators, every new device represents a new challenge. Flagship devices that introduce new operating systems, services and chipsets to the network are particularly challenging. R&S®ROMES4 supports the latest Exynos and Qualcomm chipsets. And in combination with a scanner, R&S®ROMES4 lets operators verify the latest network features, including 4x4 MIMO and carrier aggregation.

The LTE feature 4x4 MIMO requires a complex antenna design of four uncorrelated receive antennas inside the phone. Given the smartphone form factor, this is a technological challenge and operators will want to make sure that the antenna streams correlate correctly by comparing the results to reference measurements made with state-of-the-art scanners such as R&S®TSME. Tweaking the LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation feature also requires a perfect correlation between the device, its firmware and the network configuration. Any misalignment would heavily affect the performance.

The quality of experience (QoE) of specific services, including voice and video, depends on the device, making it the key to understanding the full user experience in a network. A very well-maintained network may deliver bad quality to subscribers simply because it has not been adapted to specific end-user devices. That is why testing with commercially available smartphones is pivotal to the success of integrating new devices into a network.

The integration of the Samsung S9 smartphones into the complete Rohde & Schwarz mobile network testing portfolio is ongoing. Keep up to date with the latest information on our LinkedIn and Twitter channels, website and mobile network testing expert blog.
