FDD LTE uses paired spectrum allocation, one band for uplink and one band for downlink operation. TD-LTE uses a different approach, a single frequency band sharing the channel between transmission and reception, spacing them apart in the time domain. Since other TDD based technologies, including TD-SCDMA and WiMAX™, also have a migration path to LTE, combining FDD and TDD makes the scale and economy of the LTE ecosystem especially robust and attractive.
