In Power Electronics, the embedded circuits controlling and converting the electrical power available for other modules form one of the basic parts of electronic devices. A well though-out design is key to determining the performance of the individual components and boards as well as the device as a whole. With the ever-increasing number of battery-powered devices, aspects such as energy efficiency and power management play an increasingly important role in designing power electronic circuits. The domination of LED technology for illumination requires stable, regulated, low voltage DC current sources that are both reliable and low price.

Depending on the available electricity source, an AC/DC converter or DC/DC down converter is required, usually some form of switching mode power supply. To maximize power conversion efficiency and performance, a common practice is to increase the switching frequency. Increasing the switching speed, increases the demands on timing characteristics, interactions between high and low side transistors, and undesired outcomes such as shoot-through and excessive EMI.

Engineers working in the fields of embedded power electronics design, power conversion efficiency and motor drive electronics often face contradictory design challenges, such as reliability and power efficiency, reduced size and weight, as well as compliance to EMC regulations. The requirements for power testing are critical both in the operation of the power supply, and even more during development.
