Testing NFC-Enabled Devices in Polling Mode

NFC devices must conform to the NFC Forum’s published specifications in order to ensure interoperability. These specifications define several tests for NFC devices. Important RF tests in active polling mode include the measurement of the carrier frequency accuracy, the power level, the waveform characteristic (timing parameters), the load modulation sensitivity and the threshold level.

Testing an NFC device in active mode requires a signal generator for generating the listener responses and an analyzer for measuring the waveforms from the NFC device under test. In addition, an NFC reference listening device is used to act as a target for the polling device under test.

Test Setup for NFC Polling Tests

The NFC device under test sends polling commands through a reference listening device that acts as target. The polling commands are captured by the R&S®RTO digital oscilloscope. The oscilloscope immediately triggers a vector signal generator, such as the R&S®SMBV100A equipped with the R&S®SMBV-K89 NFC A/B/F option, to generate the standard-compliant response command to the device under test. The response command is then acknowledged by the polling device. The entire waveform sequences are captured by the R&S®RTO. Equipped with the R&S®RTO-K11 I/Q software interface option, the oscilloscope offers special trigger functions for NFC-A, NFC-B and NFC-F polling signals, thus eliminating the need for an external trigger device. In addition, the R&S®RTO-K11 makes it possible to provide the I/Q data of the captured waveforms to the R&S®FS-K112PC NFC measurement software for demodulation and detailed analysis.
