Ping Tests using CMW500 in one LTE cell

Question

Is it possible to set up an IP peer to peer test using CMW500 between a corporate network and one EUT attached to an LTE cell?

Answer

The CMW500 Wireless Communication Tester offers this capability by means of the DAU (Data Application Unit). Here a small walkthrough on how to set this test successfully.

  • Firstly, one needs to open one DAU Measurement Window and set up the type of network connected to the DAU rear panel LAN connector on the CMW500.
This can be found under Configure Services->IP Config

  • For this particular case DHCPv4 was selected. After this, the user needs to apply the changes, as a result some available mobile IPv4 Addresses will immediately appear as per below,

  • As a next step one LTE Signaling Window needs to be opened to simulate a cell. For this instance, one needs to set the Connection Type to Data Application Unit.
In addition, the Attenuation Path in db needs to be considered. This is especially important for non-conducted tests using for example a shielded box like R&S Model CMW-Z10.

  • At this point the LTE Signaling can be turned ON and the EUT should be able to reach the “Attached” state. One can then observe that the EUT gets assigned one IP address in accordance to the addresses assigned initially while setting the DHCP LAN Connection.

  • Finally, the user can then go back to the Data Application Measurement Window and run successfully a Ping Test using the IP Address assigned in the LTE Signaling Window.
