Rohde & Schwarz is showing its broadcast and media solutions at the event, as well as participating in the exciting conference programme. A key topic will cover the switchover of Italy’s national Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 at the beginning of 2020, to create more spectrum capacity for future mobile services.

The event will also look at 5G Broadcast technologies, which promise a step-up in quality and capacity for future broadcasting direct to mobiles.

The European Digital Forum features a host of speakers from broadcasters, manufacturers and regulators including RAI, Sky Italia and the EBU.

5G TODAY research project

Under the lead of IRT, the 5G TODAY project partners Kathrein and Rohde & Schwarz are investigating large-scale TV broadcasting in FeMBMS mode. The project is supported by the associated partners Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR) and Telefónica.

Two high-performance Rohde & Schwarz transmitters for 100 kilowatts of ERP have been installed at Wendelstein and Ismaning in Bavaria. The trial went live on May 9, 2019. The transmitters form a Single Frequency Network (SFN) and enable mobile and portable reception in the greater Munich area.
