Demystifying EMC 2019

Monday 28 January 2019 | The Silverstone Wing, Silverstone Circuit, Northamptonshire

Delivering Expertise - High quality training, free to industry

Demystifying EMC on 28 January 2019 at Silverstone is your opportunity to get or stay up to speed with this critical topic.

In just one day, receive updates on regulations and standards, brush up on good practice in circuit design, see practical demonstrations – and collect some valuable CPD points courtesy of the IET.

Now in its 5th year Demystifying EMC is hosted by Rohde & Schwarz and backed by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). Established as one of the industry’s primary training events, it features specialist Training Partners and industry partners alongside Rohde & Schwarz own experts. The day is divided into four tracks, allowing you to pick the sessions that you want to attend out of a total of 16 different topics.

If you have an EMC challenge, want to improve your knowledge or are venturing into the topic for the first time, this event is for you.

Join us on Monday 28 January 2019 at The Silverstone Wing, Silverstone Circuit, Northamptonshire.

Session 1: 10:00 - 11:00

Real Time Spectral Analysis: Lee Hill Silent Solutions LLC

  • In this presentation, Lee will discuss the capabilities of different types of spectral analysis technologies, and then demonstrate how real-time analysis can literally make previously hidden signals leap into plain view

Jump up into mmWave Frequencies versus Product Compliance: Ben Mercer UL

  • Take a leap up into the recent development of extremely high frequency (EHF) millimetre wave applications and the respective product compliance requirements for this growing industry.

Refresher topics on RED and suggestion for risk Assessments including tests over the air: Christian Reimer, Rohde & Schwarz

  • This session shows what the various EN standards covered under the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU Art. 3.2 have in common. The presentation is a time-saver for those who need to dig into the EN standards.

Current IEC-CISPR Standardisation Work: Martin Wiles, Albatross Projects

  • Update on International EMC Standardisation work focusing on the work in IEC / CISPR
  • Level will be for EMC experts not necessarily participating in the UK NC and International standards
  • It is intended as a condensed easy to understand summary of the most important changes within the standards

Session 2: 11:30 - 12:30

Practical Probing Techniques for EMC troubleshooting: Lee Hill Silent Solutions

  • Lee will discuss and demonstrate the secrets to uncovering the most exlusive EMI problems.

From Design to Pre-Compliance: Pit Falls and Pro Tips: James Pawson - Unit 3 Compliance

  • In this talk, James shares his experience from the design and pre-compliance coal face.

EMC and Radio; are you testing for engineering or compliance? Michael Derby - ACB

  • How to perform useful testing while developing a product, and how those measurements can relate to legal test requirements.
  • How to find the legal testing requirements and when they must be enforced.

Investigation of EMI Absorbers for Noise Suppression in GPS and GLONASS Bands - Dr Tamara Monti - Dassault Systemes Simulia

  • In this paper RF absorber material intended for EMI noise suppression resulting from high-speed integrated circuits and PCB structures will be studied by measurements and simulations.

Session 3: 13:30 - 14:30

Common-mode Current, Ground loops and Low Frequency Signal Integrity: Lee Hills - Silent Solutions

  • Lee will present intuitive ways to define grounds and common-mode current. He will also model, demonstrate, and measure common-mode currents using a spectrum analyser, a noisy digital product, a current probe, and an oscilloscope.

Radio performance issues when installing radio modules and collocating multiple radio transceivers: Charlie Blackham - Sulis Consultants

  • Brief discussion of Radio Equipment Directive and what is “radio equipment”
  • EMI coupling of clocks and other signals causing receiver blocking and reduced operating range
  • Antenna inefficiency and how your antenna might not behave as the datasheet says

Fearing change? The costs and consequences of making changes to products: Michael Derby - ACB

  • The regulatory compliance manager of a company works hard to get their product approved; then sits down, puts his feet up to enjoy a nice cup of tea. He gets a memo to say that the company has figured out they can save £1 per product by a subtle re-design, and the engineering team are celebrating with champagne if he would care to join them.

EMC Testing Medical Devices - more than just a single standard: Steve Hayes - Element Materials Technology

  • Many medical device manufacturers rightly focus on the clinical aspects of their product and don’t always understand the impact of it being used in close proximity to other electrical equipment or wireless devices.

Session 4: 15:00 - 16:00

Deal or No Deal? Your EMC BREXIT Survival Guide: Nick Wainwright - Eurofins York

  • This presentation will identify how UK manufacturers will be affected and how they can best prepare themselves for the challenges of market access in a post-BREXIT world.

Understanding Electromagnetic Field Safety for Workplace and Products: Pete Dorey - TUV

  • Electromagnetic field safety ensures that exposure of people to electromagnetic fields from electrical and radiofrequency sources is not harmful.
  • The relationship between the regulations is examined and routes to conformity presented illustrating the various methods of compliance via testing, calculation and highlighting where exclusions can be applied to minimize cost and effort to achieve compliance.

RED for Automotive: Rob Short - Rohde & Schwarz

  • RED applies to radio modules integrated into vehicles. Under this directive, a vehicle can be regarded as a piece of radio equipment.
  • Although there is no legal requirement to test the entire vehicle, many of the technical approaches used by the tests in the harmonised standards deserve a closer look.

EMC Compliance of Fixed Installations: Dan White and Neil Constance - Eurofins Hursley

  • This presentation will cover what the EMC directive requires of fixed installations, how installers may (or may not) interpret these requirements, best practice, not so best practice and real examples of the situations encountered when working on this type of project.
