Get your IT through summer safely

The warm season is in full swing and shows its best side. And although the weather also makes for a great time on your own doorstep: summer time is travel time. This means abandoned offices and apartments. The focus in holiday preparations is often on securing windows and doors - and who waters the lawn during the absence. It is largely forgotten that in today's mobile and networked times, devices and sensitive data also need to be protected.

You can easily take a few precautions to give the holiday the attention it deserves.

Before shutting down your PC and pulling the office door shut behind you, check that everything on your computer is secure. Protect all devices with a password and make sure that sensitive data is not so easily accessible in the event of unauthorized access. Storing documents in a password-protected cloud can provide another security barrier.

The software of all devices, but especially the mobile ones you want to take with you on your travels, should be up to date. This eliminates any security gaps caused by outdated software that can be exploited by hackers - and reduces the size of the target area. Another advantage of doing possible updates before the trip starts: Internet connections and networks can be unstable or unsafe on the go. If you only take care of it during the trip, it can quickly become a nuisance. You can also avoid the risk of man-in-the-middle attack from open wireless networks by disabling auto-connect connections on your mobile devices.

Another, not inconceivable scenario: Despite holidays, you have a work problem and you have to act. Even if you are staying in a hotel with password-protected WLAN, you should always make sure that you only enter secure networks through a VPN connection - something that must be taken into account before your holiday.

EC and credit cards are another popular target for attacks. In many countries it is a good idea to pay in cash. Cash withdrawals at ATMs are often safer than cashless payments. It is therefore worth checking all accounts used for conspicuous money transactions after your holiday.

In the event of an attack or data theft, the consequences are far-reaching. Not only the holiday gets a bitter taste. Subsequently, you have to face up to possible responsibilities or find solutions to sufficiently compensate for losses. Small steps can significantly increase the IT security of your private and professional devices and data. Don't save on it and enjoy your free time afterwards.
