Stories by Jens Berger

Jens Berger is the full-time Senior Director Applied Research and has a strong interest in exploring the latest technologies and their performance. Jens has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and defines test scenarios for R&S product lines as well as signal analysis and objective quality models for audio, video and data services and applicable scoring models. Berger holds several patents for testing and measurement procedures and leads the “Perceptual-based objective methods for voice and audio quality measurements in telecommunications services” group at ITU-T, actively supporting our international standardization efforts. In his posts, he delights in reproducing human perception as accurately as possible, scoring network performance and finding ways to ensure the best telecommunications experience for users.

Interactivity Test: ITU-T Recommendation G.1051 (part 8)

May 11, 2023 | by Jens Berger

Data transport latency has become an important factor in interactive and real-time usage of next generation mobile networks. Measuring latency under realistic traffic conditions and quantifying perceived interactivity are important building blocks in network performance evaluations. The new Recommendation ITU-T G.1051 uses Rohde & Schwarz latency measurements and interactivity tests as international standards.

Interactivity test: Dependency of packet latency on data rate (part 7)

January 26, 2023 | by Jens Berger

Data transport latency has become a very – if not the most – important factor in interactive and real-time use cases for next generation mobile networks. Latency is not a constant; it can vary over time but can also depend on data rate and packet stream characteristics. The following analyzes packet latency and its dependency on data rate and packet size in a few example mobile networks.

Interactivity test: Packet delay variation and packet loss (part 6)

October 17, 2022 | by Jens Berger

Data transport latency has become a very – if not the most – important factor in interactive and real-time use cases for next generation mobile networks. Real-time capability is not determined by the average latency at which the packets are delivered, but rather by the latency of the slowest packets. The following analyzes delay jitter and the packet loss in the uplink and downlink.

Interactivity test: Impact of changing network conditions on latency and jitter (part 5)

February 17, 2022 | by Jens Berger

Data transport latency has become a very – if not the most – important factor in interactive and real-time use cases for next-generation mobile networks. Real-time capability is not determined by how fast the packets are delivered but by which ones are received last. The following analyzes the distance data packets have to travel in mobile network channels when network conditions change.

Interactivity test: Distance to server impact on latency and jitter (part 4)

September 28, 2021 | by Jens Berger

Data transport latency is a very – if not the most – important factor for interactive and real-time use cases in future mobile networks. Today the focus is often on maximizing bitrate and transport capacity for fast downloading, but future applications will require extremely low latency for real-time interactions.

Evaluating visual quality and video MOS based on subjective perception

December 21, 2016 | by Jens Berger

How do you measure video quality as perceived by end users? The video’s actual visual quality is only one of many factors determining customer satisfaction with the service; other determiners include the service’s structure and the user’s experience and expectations. For real field video quality measurements, reference measurements are necessary.
