Bluetooth®, initially developed 20 years ago, is a frequency hopping spread spectrum technology that operates in the globally available ISM band at 2.4 GHz. Initial requirements aim at a data connection based on certain protocol stack profiles (such as audio, file exchange or video) of around 700 kbit/s in an ad hoc network configuration. With the Bluetooth® 2.0 specification, an enhanced data rate (EDR) of up to 3 Mbit/s was specified. Following the trend towards lower power consumption, the Bluetooth® SIG started to specify the Bluetooth® low energy (LE) technology. A technology typically used on all kinds of wearables, peripherals or IoT devices requiring ultra-low data communication. With Bluetooth® 5, the Bluetooth® SIG is paving the way for the internet of things with features for long-reach, higher data rates, and advanced advertizing capabilities. The Bluetooth® specification 5.1 further extends the capabilities in order to allow precise indoor positioning.

Rohde & Schwarz test solutions for Bluetooth®

Test and measurement solutions from Rohde & Schwarz support Bluetooth® basic rate, EDR and LE in line with Bluetooth® core specifications v1.2, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0+HS, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 5 and 5.1. The Bluetooth® SIG qualified the R&S®CMW wireless communication tester for RF testing. Supporting Bluetooth®, WLAN and other non-cellular and cellular technologies in the same equipment, makes the Rohde & Schwarz solutions ideal for verifying IoT devices. Bluetooth® Classic for wireless voice and audio

Bluetooth® Classic is primarily used for wireless audio devices, such as headphones or portable speakers. This means that in addition to transmitter and receiver tests, it is also necessary to perform audio quality tests.

Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) for wearables, peripherals and IoT

Bluetooth® LE is an ultra-low-power version of Bluetooth® meant for low-power devices such as peripherals, wearables or sensors used in a wide range of applications from medical to automotive. It is ideal for applications that do not require continuous connection but depend on long battery life.
