R&S®RTO-K14 Signal Integrity Analysis with Advanced Eye Measurement

Intuitive visualization of transmission quality

For characterizing transmitters and data communication systems it is important to analyze the transmission quality. The transmission quality is impacted by effects such as channel noise, intersymbol interference and in general by the performance of the transmission system. An intuitive way to assess and visualize the quality of a transmission system is the eye diagram. The diagram is generated by superimposing the bits of a waveform over time. The resulting graph, which resembles an “eye” between a pair of rails, provides a composite picture of the overall quality of a system’s physical layer characteristics including amplitude variations, timing uncertainties, and infrequent signal anomalies. The Rohde & Schwarz advanced eye analysis option R&S®RTO-K14 generates up to four eye diagrams in parallel from single long multi-period acquisitions of clock or serial data signals.

Teamwork in Signal Integrity Analysis

The Rohde & Schwarz advanced eye analysis option R&S®RTO-K14 extends the signal integrity analysis capabilities of the R&S®RTO oscilloscopes. The option can be used stand-alone on the R&S®RTO oscilloscope or be combined with jitter analysis or serial bus trigger and decode. For the latter one, not only high-speed communication buses but also burst-based communications, typical for low-speed data standards such as CAN or USB, are supported. Gating and protocol specific filtering allows a selection of content used to generate the eye diagrams

With a Rohde & Schwarz R&S®RTO oscilloscope transmission quality measurements are made easy. A variety of automated measurements such as eye height and width, noise parameters, Q factor, rise and fall times as well as various jitter results are available. Also cursor measurements and zoom functionality are supported together with customizable colormapping and persistence settings independent from oscilloscope base settings. The advanced eye diagram analysis as well as the automated eye measurements can be enabled comfortably via a toolbar icon and configured thru the sidebar menu.

Measurement configuration made easy

A convenient way to setup eye diagram measurements is to use the eye diagram wizard. The wizard guides thru the oscilloscope settings step-by-step and enables, configures and executes the measurement afterwards. The Eye Wizard includes also display settings and the configuration of the clock data recovery (CDR) and takes care of the eye diagram scaling for an adequate and user-friendly presentation of the measurement results. The eye diagram wizard is also applicable for setting up a measurement on decoded serial bus signals such as CAN or USB.

Reveal system performance quickly

To evaluate the quality and stability of a device under test pass/fail evaluations by means of mask test are performed. The mask test functionality is available within the R&S oscilloscopes and can be applied to eye diagrams. The R&S®RTO-K14 functionality extends the standard mask test functionality in a way that pre-selected mask for low-speed and high-speed serial data standards can be selected. The mask test also includes test result statistics. The statistic provides information about the number of analyzed eyes and mask violations. With the associated eye stripe feature mask violations can be marked in the time domain and be correlated with the eye diagram violation.
