CATV / DOCSIS

Comprehensive testing of DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems, CMTS, network amplifiers and components

The DOCSIS®3.1 standard was created to address two primary needs for cable communications providers: higher data throughput to meet consumers’ demand for high data rate applications and flexibility to support a variety of applications. In addition to this, DOCSIS 3.1 needs to work alongside with the previous DOCSIS generations.

Test & Measurement Solutions for:

  • Cable modems
  • CATV amplifiers, lasers and cable network components
  • Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS)

Precise measurements on CM upstream channels with up to 96MHz channel bandwidth

With the latest release of DOCSIS technology, current Cable Modems (CM) will have to handle both DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1 signals. In particular DOCSIS 3.1 utilises 192MHz bandwidth channels with OFDM providing high data throughput towards the devices.

  • DOCSIS 3.0 CM PHY Testing

Full channel load conditions for cable amplifier, analogue/digital lasers and RF CATV TV components testing

With the addition of DOCSIS 3.1 the frequency of operation will primarily extend to 1.2GHz and then to 1.8GHz. Current DOCSIS infrastructure might or might not be able to support these frequency extensions and therefore it is necessary for these components to be tested.

Cable modem termination system (CMTS)

With the latest release of the DOCSIS specification current CMTS will have to handle both DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1 signals. DOCSIS 3.1, for example, utilizes 192MHz bandwidth channels with OFDM modulation and constellations as high as 16 kQAM. This could become a challenge for CMTS since the modulation error ratio (MER) must be higher than 50dB. The Rohde & Schwarz signal generators and analyzers address this challenge, providing the following capabilities:

  • DOCSIS 3.1 CMTS PHY Testing
  • DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS PHY Testing
  • Emulation of data traffic from multiple cable modems
  • Ingress and impairment simulation
