Substantially higher bandwidth modes are one of the technology components discussed in 5G to achieve higher capacity. This will require significantly higher carrier frequencies compared with today’s cellular network implementations below 6 GHz.

3GPP has initially defined a frequency range of 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz for 5G NR cmWave and mmWave operation. First commercial deployments will use 26 GHz to 28 GHz and 39 GHz frequencies. The single carrier channel bandwidth and carrier aggregation determine the bandwidth requirements. A maximum channel bandwidth per 5G NR carrier of 100 MHz, 200 MHz and even 400 MHz plus multiple carrier aggregation leads to a bandwidth of up to 2 GHz. For the cellular industry, the spectrum above 6 GHz is a new area and developers are faced with many challenges such as higher attenuation and the frequency response of components. Consequently, research and development require flexible test and measurement solutions to generate and analyze such wideband signals in order to develop and optimize their designs.

    • The R&S®VSE-K96 OFDM analysis software adds the capability to perform modulation measurements on general OFDM signals. The OFDM demodulator is user-configurable and standard-independent.
    • The R&S®FSW-K70 option flexibly analyzes digitally modulated single carriers down to the bit level.
    • The R&S®FSW-K544 frequency response correction option compensates for cables, connectors and test fixtures used in the test setup.

5G NR test solutions for wideband signal generation

With the R&S®SMW200A vector signal generator, Rohde & Schwarz provides leading-edge baseband capabilities that are ideal for demanding wideband signal simulations:

  • The R&S®SMW200A is the first vector signal generator to offer an internal modulation bandwidth of 2 GHz with a frequency range of up to 40 GHz that enables R&D engineers to generate signals with extremely wide bandwidth up to microwave frequencies.
  • Equipped with the R&S®SMW-K114 5G air interface candidates option, the R&S®SMW200A can create 5G NR-like waveforms based on OFDM.
  • The internal ARB functionality supports playback of e.g. Matlab waveforms with a bandwidth of up to 2 GHz.
  • Now a single unit can generate typical test scenarios such as coexistence tests with LTE or wide bandwidth 5G signals in the microwave range.
  • The R&S®SMW-K544 user-defined frequency response option compensates for cables, connectors, power amplifiers and test fixtures used in the test setup – in real time.
