Accurate Test Fixture Characterization and De-embedding

For measurements of non-connectorized devices, test fixtures, probes or other structures are used to adapt from the coaxial interface of the test setup to the device under test (DUT). For accurate measurements of the DUT, these lead-ins and lead-outs need to be characterized, so that their effects can be mathematically removed, i.e. de-embedded from the measurement results.This application note provides practical hints to accurately characterize and de-embed these lead-in and lead-out structures with R&S Vector Network Analyzers ZNA, ZNB, ZNBT and ZND. As de-embedding is also essential in other test equipment like oscilloscopes, etc., this guide also describes, how lead-ins and lead-outs can be accurately characterized with a VNA and then exported as an S-Parameter file to be used by other test instruments.

Precise measurements on high-speed digital signal lines with the R&S®ZNB

With continuously increasing data rates, signal inte grity aspects of high-speed digital designs and the components used become more and more challenging. Particularly at higher data rates, vector network analyzers (VNA) are increasingly replacing traditional time domain reflectometry (TDR) setups for testing passive components such as connectors, cables and PCBs. Users benefit from the higher accuracy, speed and ESD robustness of the VNA, making the VNA the instrument of choice in this field.

DisplayPort: Compliance and Signal Integrity Debugging

As DisplayPort evolves to support ultra-high resolutions and increased data rates, robust compliance testing is essential to ensure interoperability across devices and interconnects. This application note provides a structured overview of physical-layer testing for DisplayPort source transmitters and passive cables, aligned with VESA CTS v2.1. The note covers key test procedures using Rohde & Schwarz solutions, including oscilloscope-based measurement at standardized test points, automated test execution with ScopeSuite, and signal integrity debug via equalization and jitter decomposition. It further details cable characterization using mixed-mode S-parameter analysis on a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA), with support for simulated eye diagrams and TDR-based impedance diagnostics. Practical setup examples and product references are provided to help engineers perform repeatable, standards-compliant DisplayPort PHY validation.

Driven by the fast growing 5G market, today’s digital systems operate in these high frequency ranges that come with completely new challenges. With slope steepness’s of just a few picoseconds, any discontinuity in the impedance and impairment of the inductance or capacitance on the PCB or back drill defects on the PCB can have a massive impact on the signal quality. The industry recognizes that there is a growing need for functional high-speed testing of PCBs. Verifying 10BASE-T1S interfaces for automotive Ethernet

10BASE-T1S Ethernet enables the integration of diverse sensors into an automotive-Ethernet vehicle supply system, for example short-range radar sensors for detecting blind spots or ultrasonic sensors for the parking assistant. For reliable operation of the functions, data transmission over 10BASE‑T1S Ethernet must be assured at all times and in every climatic environment. Functionality must be tested during development and in production. Only 10BASE-T1S Ethernet interfaces that have passed compliance testing in line with IEEE 802.3cg can be deployed in vehicles. Consequently, vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers need measuring equipment that allows them to perform these tests quickly and reliably.
