Demonstration of Quantum Communication in Germany

Motivation

With the continuing development of digital technologies, the digitalization of critical infrastructure also advances. In the imminent age of quantum computers, it is necessary to develop future-proof cryptographic methods to protect confidential information. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a technique that exploits quantum physical properties of light quanta to enable quantum computer resistant communication. To make this technology usable for Germany and the EU, it must be integrated into existing sensitive network structures.

Approach and goals

The goals of the DemoQuanDT project are the investigation, development and demonstration of a secure and network-independent QKD network management system, which allows quantum keys to be distributed to encryption devices and used independently of the deployed QKD devices. Initially a reference laboratory will be implemented at Deutsche Telekom to investigate network and interface compatibility of the QKD devices and the network management system. In the course of the project, a quantum communication testbed connecting Berlin and Bonn will be implemented as a demonstrator. It will include all network layers, i.e. from the hardware layer to the application. It is intended to establish the longest quantum network in Germany. Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity’s contributions include encryption devices and key management systems and furthermore it is concerned with the security aspects of the demonstrator.

Project organization

DemoQuanDT is a joint research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Various specialist partners from research and industry are involved in the project. Deutsche Telekom Technik GmbH is responsible for the project lead.

  • Project management: VDI/VDE-IT Berlin
  • Consortium: Deutsche Telekom Technik GmbH, ADVA Optical Networking SE, KEEQuant GmbH, Technical University of Darmstadt, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity GmbH
  • Project duration: 01/2022 – 12/2024
