SEQRET - Secure and Industrialized Quantum Key Distribution for European Telecom Networks

SEQRET

Secure and Industrialized Quantum Key Distribution for European Telecom Networks

Motivation

In the imminent age of quantum computers, it is necessary to develop future-proof cryptographic methods to protect confidential information. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a technique that exploits quantum physical properties of light quanta to enable quantum computer resistant communication. In order to be able to meet the expected demand in Europe, industrialization of QKD systems that meet suitably high security standards is essential in Europe.

Approach and goals

The SEQRET project (Secure and Industrialized Quantum Key Distribution for European Telecom Networks), funded by the European Commission as part of the EuroQCI initiative (European Quantum Communication Infrastructure), aims to industrialize a QKD system based on the continuous variable (CV) principle. The aim of industrialization is to make it possible to produce large quantities. Another important aspect is certification. The declared objective in the project is to establish the first QKD certification process according to Common Criteria EAL4+ and to develop the corresponding first certifiable QKD system.

With its experience in developing multiple award-winning and approved IT security solutions, Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity plays an important role in the project. The company's task is to integrate the QKD prototypes into its secure hardware platform on the one hand and into its secure product development and manufacturing process on the other, which will enable the successful industrialization and certification of the QKD system in the first place.

Project organization

SEQRET is a joint funding project supported by the European Commission (EU) under the EuroQCI initiative. Various specialist partners from research and industry are involved in the project. KEEQuant GmbH is responsible for the project lead.

  • Project management: European Commission
  • Consortium: KEEQuant GmbH, Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity GmbH, SMART Photonics B.V., dacoso GmbH, Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry - Polish Academy of Sciences (PSNC), CESNET, Exatel S.A.
  • Project duration: 01/2023 – 09/2025
