Antenna measurement technologies

Leading the future of antenna research

At Rohde & Schwarz, we have a long history of pioneering new test and measurement solutions for antenna research. Our commitment to advancing antenna technologies is evident in our extensive portfolio of cutting-edge antenna testing equipment. From the early stages of antenna research to the final testing phase, we have been at the forefront, providing innovative tools that redefine industry standards.

In addressing antenna research challenges, we don't just offer solutions; we expand possibilities. Our dedication to excellence is embodied in every product, providing researchers and engineers with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of antenna measurement.

Developing antenna technologies

We are proud of our long list of patents. Over the past 15 years, we have submitted over 100 patents on antenna measurement, with close to 70 granted. These patents underscore our relentless pursuit of excellence, showcasing our leadership in developing state-of-the-art antenna measurement technologies.

  • C. Rowell, B. Derat, “Test system and test method,” U.S. Patent 10536228: invention of a very compact (most footprint effective) over-the-air (OTA) antenna test system
  • C. Rowell, “Measurement system for testing a device under test over-the-air,” U.S. Patent 11340278: the concept of multi-CATR arrangements for simulating multiple angle of arrival. This allowed Rohde & Schwarz to be the only player in the market that can cover all 3GPP RF FR2 conformance testing scenarios in one chamber.
  • B. Derat, G. Hamberger, “Method, system and computer program for correcting radiation pattern,” U.S. Patent 10830805: an algorithm that enables error correction in a small test chamber when the antenna of the device under test (DUT) is offset from the center of coordinates

We have also published studies in prominent academic journals and conferences.

  • B. Derat, G. F. Hamberger, and F. Michaelsen, “Shortest range length to measure the total radiated power,” IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation: a revision of the concept of far-field test distance showing that the Fraunhofer test distance is not needed in some applications
  • G. F. Hamberger, J. A. Antón, S. J. Lachner and B. Derat, “Correction of over the air transmit and receive wireless device performance errors due to displaced antenna positions in the measurement coordinate system,” IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation: publication on the offset correction algorithm registered under U.S. Patent 10830805 (shown above)

Master your antenna measurement challenges

Test and measurement in antenna research present a set of intricate challenges that demand advanced equipment, methodologies and techniques.

Key challenges include:
