Designetz – a research project funded by the BMWi

Motivation

The rapid rise of renewable energy offers various ecological, economic and social opportunities. At the same time, it is a great challenge to the energy industry that is confronted with an increasingly decentralized energy production structure. Planning and operating power grids has become much more complex. Operators need to ensure power supply while complying with the targets of the energy transition (decentralization, decarbonization and intelligently networking consumption and production). To that end, they need a solution that allows for supply-dependent production while remaining flexible regarding load and storage, and integrating renewable energy. To achieve this, custom solutions and new concepts need to be examined from a systemic perspective, combined and demonstrated.

Approach and goals

The project Designetz aims at developing a scalable concept that is compatible with various technologies while leading the way to secure and efficient power supply. Some exemplary regions serve as models to identify power supply and consumption for urban and industrial load centers, which is an essential contribution to the energy transition. Power surplus created with renewable energy (mostly emerging in the surrounding areas of these load centers) can be distributed as needed.

At Designetz, Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity is involved in the integrated data and services platform of work package AP6 (ICT draft) and functions as an expert partner for IT security in critical infrastructures.

The goals of Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity in this project include:

  • Analyzing and designing a trustworthy infrastructure and security architecture for the software-defined platform of the data node as part of a holistic security and data protection concept
  • Combining the ICT infrastructure with Trusted Computing
  • Developing a security target up to EAL 5 according to CC
  • Integrating hardware-based security and trust anchors to create isolated compartments using technologies for proactive security

Project organization:

Designetz is a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and involves various expert partners from research and industrial fields. The BMWi is the project owner for this project in the scope of the funding area Smart Energy Showcases – Digital Agenda for the Energy Transition (SINTEG). innogy SE is responsible for the project lead.
