R&S®SMW-B14 Fading Simulator

When signals are sent from the transmitter to the receiver, various fading effects occur. As a result, multiple propagation paths may be superimposed on each other either constructively or destructively. In addition, the movement of the receiver relative to the transmitter creates a frequency Doppler shift. The R&S®SMW200A fading simulator makes it easy to simulate these conditions in the lab. This is the only way to reliably optimize receiver performance

State-of-the-art channel emulation

The internal R&S®SMW-B14 fading simulator option turns the R&S®SMW200A vector signal generator into a unique one-box channel simulation solution. A single R&S®SMW-B14 hardware module is able to emulate SISO channel conditions with up to 20 fading paths. With a maximum fading bandwidth of 160 MHz, also wideband signals such as WLAN IEEE 802.11ac can be faded. A time resolution of 2.5 ps ensures that even indoor fading conditions can be simulated realistically. Besides the classic multipath fading scenarios with Rayleigh, Rice, pure Doppler or lognormal fading, dynamic fading scenarios such as birth-death, moving propagation or high-speed train fading are supported as well. This makes it possible to reliably assess the receiver performance of a DUT – regardless of whether it is a multistandard macro base station, a small cell, a repeater or a mobile device.

The fading simulator of the R&S®SMW200A vector signal generator can be scaled from simple SISO fading simulation to advanced higher-order MIMO channel simulation. The instrument can be equipped with one, two or four R&S®SMW-B14 hardware fading modules. One R&S®SMW-B14 module enables SISO fading. With a second R&S®SMW-B14 option, fading for two-antenna transmit or receive diversity scenarios with correlated fading can be simulated. If the R&S®SMW-K74 MIMO fading/routing option is included , 2x2 MIMO fading channel emulation is possible. With four R&S®SMW-B14 hardware fading modules and the R&S®SMW-K74 MIMO fading/routing option, up to 16 separate fading channels can be generated simultaneously in one instrument. This allows simulation of MIMO scenarios such as 8x2, 2x8, 4x4, 3x3, 4x2, 2x4 or even 2x2x2 (e.g. for LTE-A carrier aggregation 2x2 MIMO fading with two component carriers).

The user interface for operating the internal fading simulator of the R&S®SMW200A has been designed to maximize ease of use. Fading profiles for all important wireless and mobile radio standards (e.g. GSM/EDGE, 3GPP FDD, LTE, LTE-Advanced, CDMA2000, TETRA, WLAN as well as MIMO profiles) can be directly set via predefined scenarios. To handle special test requirements, the fading profile parameters can also be configured by the user. The graphical display of the fading paths provides an overview of the situation at all times. It shows the number of paths, timing, relative power and the fading statistic that is used for each simulated echo.
