Simplified EMC testing for Veo Technologies

Advanced measurement equipment and test packages for MIPI and EMC compliance

Veo Technologies ApS aims to democratize video broadcasting and analytics that are now only available to professional teams. The team at Veo develops AI sports cameras that let users record games without a camera operator. Automatic recording and editing make it easy for coaches and players to record, analyze and share their games.

Inside Veo’s testing journey

See how interface issues and internal noise were identified and resolved early in development.

The challenge: Mobile industry processor interface (MIPI) compliance testing and EMC testing

Veo had two issues that needed to be solved:

  • Intermittent crashes of the camera interface
  • Unidentified internal noise

Veo cameras are high-speed digital cameras and must comply with MIPI Alliance specifications. MIPI compliance testing verifies that the digital interfaces in cameras comply with specifications, ensuring interoperability between the application processors, cameras and displays with the same interface. Camera interface issues caused the Veo camera to fail MIPI compliance tests.

The second issue, internal noise, was discovered during functional testing. Veo wanted to conduct electromagnetic compliance (EMC) testing to analyze and identify the interference source. EMC testing ensures that electronic products can operate without generating electromagnetic interference or being affected by it. There are many organizations that define regulatory standards for EMC, and compliance is a legal requirement for market access in many countries. Veo wanted to ensure that their cameras could pass compliance testing on the first attempt at the test house. Failing formal compliance tests is costly and delays the bringing of a product to market. Veo needed a reliable EMC test solution for precompliance testing that lets them discover and resolve potential EMC issues early in the design cycle.

Rohde & Schwarz solution

Veo reached out to Rohde & Schwarz for assistance with MIPI D-PHY debugging and EMC testing. Rohde & Schwarz offered the necessary demo equipment to try out products before committing to a purchase.

The R&S®RTO6 oscilloscope supports trigger and decode functions, as well as compliance analysis and debugging of MIPI D-PHY buses. Internal circuits are designed for low noise, high dynamic range and stable, replicable results.

The A/D converter minimizes signal distortion for high resolution and precise signal analysis. The R&S®RTO6 oscilloscope contains an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed specifically for intensive parallel processing. The oscilloscope can acquire, analyze and display waveforms with extremely high acquisition rates.

The FPL is a versatile spectrum analyzer that is both an oscilloscope and a multimeter. The FPL detects interference sources, with information about the location and frequency of the sources. The analyzer is lightweight and battery operated, making it far more portable than comparable instruments.

The R&S®CMW-Z10 RF shield box offers excellent shielding and superior coupling. The box blocks interference from external radio sources and isolates emissions from the device under test (DUT).

Results and achievements

Veo tested the camera interface with the R&S®RTO6 oscilloscope and found a broken solder joint that caused the interface to crash repeatedly. Once the joint was fixed, the camera interface stopped crashing.

"We try to give something that adds value for users. These challenges require advanced tooling on our part. This is where we work with Rohde & Schwarz as a trusted partner"
Anton Husby, Director of camera development, Veo Technologies

To resolve the internal noise, Veo used the FPL spectrum analyzer and the R&S®CMW-Z10 RF shield box to isolate and identify the interference source. The problem was traced back to the software switch being flipped. Resolving this issue helped Veo better prepare for EMC compliance testing.

Veo was also very satisfied with Rohde & Schwarz pre-sale and post-sale service support. The availability of demo equipment on short notice and excellent sales support from Rohde & Schwarz let Veo debug their design thoroughly and move forward with their product launch on time.
