In recent years, constellations of satellites are being proposed in large numbers; most of them are expected to be in orbit within the next decade. To give a perspective, while prior to 2021, less than 100 satellites were launched into LEO, this number has quadrupled in the last 5 years and is expected to reach several thousand within the next 10 years.

In the presentation, we took a look at the new breed of small satellites and their technical requirements, discussed trends in the way of developing and producing these satellites on an industrial scale and shared best practices and insights on validating the performance and reliability of them.

The future of satellite communications - How active phased array antennas master the challenges

Future satellite communication networks, let it be satellite mega-constellation, very high throughput satellites or non-terrestrial networks as part of terrestrial mobile communication networks, pose considerable challenges to the technology. Active phased array antennas will be key in making all the systems working. In this presentation we took a closer look at how active phased array antennas can fulfill the tasks of today’s and future communication networks, and what test solutions are proposed to assure best performance for characterizing active PAA.

Christian Baier

Technical Sales, Rohde & Schwarz InRadio

Christian Baier is a graduated RF engineer. He started at Rohde & Schwarz in 1996. He gained work experience in system engineering for naval communication systems and since 2001, he is working in sales for various technologies like: broadcast solutions, EMC and satellite uplink systems. Now he recently moved to the Satellite Intelligence department.

Hans Martin Steiner

CTO, ATOS

Hans Martin Steiner is currently CTO of Space & Avionics at Atos IT Solutions and Services GmbH Austria and as such responsible for the global product and solution portfolio of the space and avionics business activities of the multi-national Atos company. Hans is a Computer Scientist by education. He had various management posts at Siemens in the space domain, particularly, he was several years on-site manager of Siemens space activities. In 2007 he took over the position as Director of Siemens Space and in 2013 he became Vice President of Siemens Space. Hans is also Managing Director of Austrospace, the Association of Austrian Space Industries, as well as a member of the Advisory Board of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

Yvonne Weitsch

Market Segment Manager ADT, Rohde & Schwarz

Yvonne Weitsch received her Dipl.-Ing. degree from the University of Stuttgart in 2005 and another Dr.-Ing. degree from the Technical University of Munich in 2011, both in electrical engineering. In 2011, she joined the Antenna Department of Rohde & Schwarz in Munich. She worked on antenna development, antenna measurement techniques as well as near-field to far-field transformation techniques and echo suppression. In 2018 and 2019, she worked closely with the Technology Management team focusing on satellite communications. Since 2019, she has been responsible for satellite testing in the market segment team for aerospace and defense.

Dr. Mohammad Reza Dehghani Kodnoeih

ALCAN Systems GmbH

Dr. Mohammad Reza Dehghani Kodnoeih is working as RF Engineer at ALCAN Systems GmbH. Prior to joining ALCAN, he did his PhD thesis with Radio Frequency Systems (RFS) and Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication of Rennes (IETR) in France. His thesis topic was development of next generation 5G directive antennas at millimeter waves which resulted in two patents and three IEEE publications. Mohammad Reza also holds a Master of Science in Digital Telecommunication Systems and Networks from Télécom ParisTech engineering school in collaboration with Sorbonne Université of Paris (UPMC, Paris VI).

Dr. Avraham Freedman

Director of System Engineering, SatixFy Ltd.

Dr. Avraham Freedman received his PhD. Form Tel-Aviv University in 1993. He has been with the industry for over 40 years, dealing with Antennas, Radars, Cellular Communication and Satellite Communication. Since 2014 he is with SatixFy Ltd. Israel Developing ASICs’ modems and antennas for both the ground and space segments of satellite communications.
