Aerial monitoring stations

Monitoring elevated to a new level

Rohde & Schwarz aerial monitoring systems are perfect tools for missions high above ground that are difficult to access by other means. Typical tasks include measurements in microwave links or interference hunting. Aerial systems measure emissions with unprecedented efficiency where measurement works best. This eliminates futile attempts to detect a side lobe of a microwave signal from the ground and ultimately saves time.

Measurements in microwave links

Rohde & Schwarz aerial monitoring systems make verification of license-compliant microwave links easy and reliable.

Microwave links will play a key role in spectrum monitoring as 5G deployment accelerates and the number of mobile base stations increases worldwide. As an important method for providing service in the absence of fiber optics, microwave will increasingly be important in the evolution of more advanced telecommunications standards such as 5G.

Due to propagation characteristics in the SHF/EHF range, most microwave transmissions are point-to-point. To detect and measure them, the antenna has to be positioned either in the main or side lobe. This is very difficult for conventional mobile or handheld solutions, since most transmissions are between antennas on high masts or on top of tall buildings or other elevated objects. A drone can easily carry the measurement equipment to the desired position.

Center frequency, occupied bandwidth and level are key parameters for every transmission. The integrated spectrum analyzer measures multiple frequency bands of interest, displays the spectrum at high resolution and calculates the occupied bandwidth for each captured signal using the ß % method, as recommended by the ITU. Superimposing reference data, e.g. based on spectrum management information, clearly reveals whether thresholds are exceeded.

Interference hunting in microwave links

Rohde & Schwarz aerial monitoring systems make interference hunting fast and efficient.

When microwave links interfere with other radio services or are affected by interference, aerial monitoring systems can be the first tool for mitigation. Thanks to their nearly unlimited mobility in all three dimensions, they can detect side lobes and back lobes of microwave links as well as other unwanted emissions. These aerial systems can even locate the emissions source.

Interference is an increasingly critical issue in the microwave range. Analyzing the spectrum reveals typical causes, like adjacent channel interference and broadband noise. Microwave interference is often not measurable from the ground due to the way microwave signals propagate. The R&S®AMS aerial monitoring system provides the capability to easily bring the measurement equipment to the place where it works best. Elevated positions increase the chance of measuring signals for efficient interference hunting.
