Bring agentic AI workflows to test and measurement

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already part of many engineering workflows, but most AI tools still only answer questions. Agentic AI goes a step further: AI agents execute steps, run commands and carry out real tasks inside your test setup. Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace brings this approach to test and measurement (T&M) by connecting AI agents directly to your test instruments. As a result, engineers spend less time on manual lookups and repetitive setup work and more time on actual testing.

Meet the Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace

Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace is a platform that lets AI agents work directly inside your test environment for the first time. It connects AI agents to your instruments through Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and AI agent plugins. Engineers use plain language to look up commands, build scripts, check logs and run instruments instead of searching through manuals or switching between tools. Because the platform draws on official Rohde & Schwarz documentation, its answers stay grounded in what your instrument supports. A generic AI assistant, by contrast, can only guess at the correct SCPI syntax. Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace is available today on the CMX500 , with more instruments to follow.

Why AI agents matter in T&M environments

Today’s test setups involve more instruments, more automation and tighter deadlines than even just a few years ago. Engineers manage complex, highly automated ecosystems, and a single validation cycle can span several instrument classes. This means that one wrong setting causes more than a single, isolated error; it can derail the entire project timeline. In this environment, engineers face four core challenges:

  • Too many commands: Each instrument has thousands of SCPI commands and native library methods, and the syntax changes with every generation. Engineers spend too much time looking up parameters and waiting for hardware to settle and too little time testing.
  • Scattered know-how: Critical context is spread across lengthy manuals, integrated development environment (IDE) scripts, live user interfaces and raw traces. The knowledge needed for troubleshooting often sits with a few senior engineers, who may not be available when a test fails.
  • Slow log triage: When a test fails, engineers manually cross-check (1) signaling logs, (2) radio frequency (RF) captures and (3) power traces across multiple layers. This process is slow, prone to human error and directly delays time to market.
  • Moving standards: Cellular releases, high-speed bus standards and power standards evolve quickly. Keeping test scripts, parameters and pass/fail criteria up to date is tedious maintenance work that consumes valuable engineering hours.

Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace: Modular MCP server for your test automation

The Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace is engineered for scale, not as a quick AI add-on. It builds on official Rohde & Schwarz sources and combines a modular MCP architecture with guardrails tuned for real lab work. The aim is to move beyond simple question-and-answer interactions toward agentic AI that guides and executes tasks from setup to result - with the reliability your test environment demands.

Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace connects AI agents to your daily engineering work through two building blocks:

  • MCP servers: The MCP server acts as a secure, standardized bridge. It allows AI agents to interact safely with your Rohde & Schwarz instruments, SCPI interfaces, measurement applications, local files, application programming interfaces (API) and logs.
  • AI agent plugins: The plugins provide domain-specific expertise. They turn a generic AI model into a specialist for instrument setup, command generation, troubleshooting and result interpretation.

Four key capabilities of Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace

  • Trusted context: AI workflows draw directly on curated documentation, instrument manuals, SCPI references and customer-specific artifacts. Agents surface the right information at the right moment, which removes manual lookup work.
  • Optimized runbooks: Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace includes predefined prompts, procedures and best-practice workflows. Agent behavior is consistent, repeatable and guided by engineering best practices rather than raw inference.
  • Specialized skills: Plug-and-play capabilities cover instrument control, SCPI sequence generation, driver interaction and log parsing. They automate common, tedious tasks so engineers can focus on complex ones.
  • Guardrails and safety: Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace embeds operational limits, safety checks, security rules and approval gates directly in the workflow. This keeps agentic systems predictable, auditable and safe for production environments.

Flexibility by design: Deployment options for Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace

Every engineering environment is different. Rohde & Schwarz AI Workplace therefore offers deployment options that match your security and integration requirements:

  • Enterprise or on-premises: For teams that need deep integration, dedicated features and full data control, Rohde & Schwarz offers on-premises MCP solutions for Mac or Unix.
  • Standalone or lightweight: For individual users or smaller teams, a local offline installer for Mac or PC provides quick, secure access without a cloud dependency.
  • Cloud trials: Time-limited or feature-limited cloud offerings allow quick evaluation.

Availability varies by assistant and instrument, and Rohde & Schwarz does not offer every deployment model for every AI Workplace tool or instrument. The options depend on the tool, the target product and the capabilities you need. Live instrument control, for example, is only available with on-premises deployments and the standalone installer. Rohde & Schwarz confirms the supported combination for your setup before you commit.

Rohde & Schwarz TechAssist: AI-based SCPI automation for T&M instruments

Rohde & Schwarz TechAssist is an SCPI-centric tool for controlling and automating your T&M instruments easily, safely and efficiently. From single command lookups to complete, repeatable SCPI sequences, it helps engineers configure hardware, run checks and build automation without constant context switching.

TechAssist is available today on the CMX500 . Rohde & Schwarz is extending it to more instruments, including signal generators, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes and other instrument classes.

What Rohde & Schwarz TechAssist does

  • Runs and inspects individual SCPI set and gets commands from your AI agent environment
  • Builds, edits and saves ordered SCPI sequences for typical test scenarios
  • Generates sequences from natural-language prompts and validates them against the instrument documentation
  • Verifies behavior live on connected instruments to confirm results and speed up debugging (on-premises server and standalone PC installer only)

Benefits of Rohde & Schwarz TechAssist

  • Faster sequence building: Validated, ordered commands reduce syntax errors, missed poll loops and timing mistakes.
  • Single source of truth: SCPI content is grounded in official manuals, command cards and programming examples.
  • Less context switching: Engineers stay in their IDE or AI agent environment instead of juggling PDFs, graphical user interfaces and scripts.
  • Broader documentation: SCPI references, device-specific guides, examples and notes are available in one place.
  • More instruments coming soon: Join the beta program to influence priorities and validation for your instruments.

How AI agents work with Rohde & Schwarz test instruments

The agentic AI approach that works in the CMX500 lab today will extend across the Rohde & Schwarz T&M portfolio. TechAssist leads the first broad instrument rollout, and more assistants will follow product by product. The following examples show the planned direction:

  • Vector network analyzers: AI agents will automate multiport calibration and de-embedding so the reference plane is not misplaced and no port is skipped. They check responses during the process to catch faulty setups early.
  • Signal generators and spectrum analyzers: AI agents will build repeatable setups for complex modulation, multicarrier mixes and phase noise configurations. They insert waits and triggers so fast frequency hops and synchronized carriers behave consistently.
  • Oscilloscopes: AI agents will automate serial bus decoding, advanced triggering and deep-memory capture so fleeting transients are not missed and capture settings stay correct.
  • Power supplies: AI agents will build safe, policy-checked power sequences, including ramps, holds and interlocks, with time-aligned current logging. This prevents harmful sequences and surfaces power-related bugs faster.
