End-to-end testing for mobile devices

Mobile device testing is categorized based on the stage of the product lifecycle and the specific technical domain being evaluated.
- Radio frequency (RF) performance testing ensures that the transmitter (TX) and receivers (RX) function correctly and meet performance standards. TX tests evaluate metrics such as output power, error vector magnitude (EVM) quality and spectrum emissions. TX tests characterize performance through sensitivity (the minimum signal level for reliable decoding) and selectivity (the ability to function in the presence of interference).
- Signaling and protocol testing involves emulating a mobile network environment to verify a device’s protocol implementations. This is essential for verifying how a device handles complex network scenarios like carrier aggregation (CA), dual connectivity (DC) and standalone (SA) vs. non-standalone (NSA) architectures.
- Application performance testing verifies the performance of specific services by assessing the actual user experience. Measurement parameters include data throughput, latency and power consumption.
- MIMO and beamforming testing is important for 5G, 5G Advanced and future wireless communication standards. MIMO testing involves realistic receiver tests that require simulating complex fading channels to ensure the device can distinguish between multiple data streams. Beamforming testing ensures that the device can correctly focus its energy in a specific direction to increase range and reduce interference.
- Conformance testing according to the standards defined by regulatory bodies such as GCF and PTCRB ensure that a device complies with 3GPP specifications. This is essential to guarantee interoperability with live networks.
- Production testing focuses on high-volume calibration and verifications. These tests are often performed in non-signaling mode using chipset-specific interfaces to minimize test time and cost while maximizing yield.
- Service and repair also involve testing. Testing is necessary to first identify what is wrong with the device and later to check whether the issue has actually been fixed.
