The University of Granada in Spain has opened the Smart Wireless Technologies Lab (SWTL), a state-of-the-art facility that is focused on pushing the boundaries of 5G Advanced and 6G research. The lab is the result of a long collaboration, in which Rohde & Schwarz has provided test and measurement equipment as well as ongoing technical support.

The SWTL is dedicated to researching and validating future wireless technologies, focusing on key areas such as 6G waveform generation and analysis, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), advanced modulation, radar cross section (RCS) measurements, material characterization, 6G channel sounding and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. The lab is unique in Spain with its combined focus on 5G Advanced and 6G.

Key Rohde & Schwarz instruments in the lab include the R&S®SMW200A vector signal generator for generating complex 6G waveforms, the FSW signal and spectrum analyzers for advanced analysis in 6G propagation, the R&S ZNA67 network analyzer for material characterization and the R&S®ATS1800C compact over-the-air (OTA) chamber for antenna measurements up to 90 GHz. These instruments provide the wide bandwidths, high accuracy and advanced modulation capabilities needed to test next-generation wireless technologies.

For the University of Granada, the SWTL means access to a world-class test environment that will help attract talent, accelerate innovation and strengthen industry collaborations.

Juan Francisco Valenzuela, Head of the Smart and Wireless Applications and Technologies Group at the University of Granada, says: “The collaboration between Rohde & Schwarz and the University of Granada – particularly through the SWAT Lab – has become an outstanding example of high-level technological cooperation. Through the continuous exchange of knowledge, resources and expertise, both institutions have advanced in the development of high-frequency measurement techniques in electromagnetic material characterization and radar cross section (RCS) measurements. This synergy has enabled access to state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge methodologies that significantly enhance the quality and scope of the research carried out.”

Pablo Padilla de la Torre, Professor of Signal Theory, Telematics and Communications at the University of Granada, says: “The SWAT Lab has found in Rohde & Schwarz a strategic partner that strengthens its research capabilities and promotes the transfer of scientific results into real-world applications. This fluid and productive collaboration has fostered training initiatives and technical demonstrations. We are now also planning joint participation in competitive projects, reinforcing the scientific excellence of the University of Granada and their commitment to innovation and technological development. This partnership continues to drive significant progress in RCS measurement and material characterization at high-frequencies, opening up new opportunities for future joint research.”

Miguel del Pie, T&M Sales Manager for Spain and Portugal at Rohde & Schwarz, says: “Rohde & Schwarz is thrilled to partner with the University of Granada for this ambitious project. The newly expanded SWTL represents a significant investment in the future of wireless communications, and we are proud to provide the advanced test and measurement solutions that will empower researchers to push the boundaries of 5G and 6G technologies. We believe this collaboration will drive significant advancements in wireless innovation, benefiting both the wireless communications industry and society at large.”
