R&S ELEKTRA, use of Open TEM cell for Radiated Emission

Question

Does ELEKTRA software have possibility to use the Open TEM cell for Radiated Emission?

Answer

GTEM cells are supported with ELEKTRA. ELEKTRA comes with a GTEM cell correlation, used for converting emitted EMI that has been measured by an EUT. GTEM cell correlation allows to compare the data with the measured electrical field of an open-area test site (OATS). In comparison to GTEM cells, Open TEM cells have no side walls for comfortable placement of the EUT.

Basically, these Open TEM cells can be used with ELEKTRA as any other GTEM cell. Using ELEKTRA, please open Device List and add a GTEM Device to Device List.

Using an Open TEM cell, there is a small challenge to determine the Factor C1. Factor C1 is needed for GTEM correlation.

The Factor C1 is related to the geometry of the cell to convert the radiation from EUT into a voltage. To determine C1 you need to know the distance from septum to GTEM side wall. Since you have an Open TEM cell, this distance is undefined. Therefore, you should iteratively determine C1 by placing a reference radiator in the Open TEM cell and adjust the Factor C1 until the correct cell Factor C1 is found with some Tests.

It is a good idea to use Open GTEM Cell in some kind of anechoic room / surrounding so that you do not have reflections from the outside back into the Open TEM Cell. This will help to have reproducible results. Open TEM cells may also suffer from Ambient distortions, which can be taken into account by doing a Test without EUT switched on.
