Stories by Michael Lorenz

Being a pioneer and putting the customer into the focus is the ambition of Michael Lorenz. The Customer Success Manger helds a Ph.D. in physics and is always on the lookout for the latest technologies and features. Michael entered the mobile communications business more than 20 years ago at Vodafone Germany with the first 3G test networks. For him, testing mobile networks is not just a job, but a passion. It is more the "why" than the "what" that stimulates and motivates him. Many projects such as fundamental research on UMTS networks, feature validation, various optimization projects and many more were the door opener to join Vodafone Group after 5 years of experience. Working for a global company allowed Michael to gain deep insight into different local markets and build a solid knowledge. LTE trial networks and early deployments were of course the perfect playground to share his expertise as a trainer in more than 20 markets, all following his optimization guidelines and measurement methodologies.
Looking for new challenges, he joined Rohde & Schwarz in 2016 as a Senior Application Engineer in the Mobile Network Testing (MNT) team, where he supports the sales team, passes on his knowledge to new colleagues and plays an important role as an interface with customers. With an ambition to be a pioneer, the physicist was one of the first members of the newly established Network Analytics Services team within MNT, bringing his skills to network benchmarking campaigns and special projects. In 2020, Michael was promoted to his current role as Customer Success Manager, where he focuses on radio network analytics and reporting, and is heavily involved with public and private 5G networks.

4×4 MIMO in LTE and 5G – the underestimated feature in mobile networks

Network densification and the introduction of new frequencies are time-consuming and cost intensive. The implementation of higher-order MIMO features into existing radio networks, however, will boost peak data rates throughout the network and deliver an additional capacity gain. 4×4 MIMO is the current state-of-the-art approach to improve LTE and 5G networks.

Validating license obligations – converting network scanner measurements into data rates

April 11, 2023 | by Michael Lorenz

“In mobile communications, trust is good but measurements are better,” says Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian minister for economic affairs, state development and energy. The German state of Bavaria ordered a fourth review of mobile network operator license obligations. The review focuses on how well operators met the minimum data rate of 100 Mbps on federal roads and selected railway lines.
