This video explains how eCall and next generation eCall work then shows the test process from GNSS module to TCU and vehicle level.
eCall is an in-vehicle system that automatically contacts emergency services in the event of an accident. Since 2018, all car manufacturers supplying the EU market have been required to equip vehicles with eCall functionality. This technology saves lives by helping emergency services get to the scene of an accident faster. In the event of a serious accident, the vehicle automatically calls the emergency services and transmits essential information. A minimum set of data (MSD) is sent to a public safety answering point (PSAP). The existing voice call allows the PSAP operator to talk to the occupants. The operator can then dispatch an ambulance if necessary and use the MSD and voice call information to optimize the response of the emergency services. The voice call and MSD can be via communicated via different generations of mobile networks.
For 2G/3G eCall, the MSD is transmitted via a circuit-switched voice channel to the PSAP using an in-band modem. Next Generation eCall uses IMS and 4G/5G technology to transmit the voice and MSD. NG eCall will be mandatory in Europe from 2026 and other regions are expected to follow.
The correct performance of Next Generation eCall must be ensured by thorough testing and Rohde & Schwarz supports the automotive ecosystem with a range of test solutions. Testing starts in the lab, where the performance of the GNSS module can be automatically verified using a GNSS simulator. At the next stage of integration, the conformance of a NG eCall enabled TCU with the relevant requirements can be verified using a radio communications tester to emulate the network, including the PSAP. The test software executes the process automatically. The eCall voice quality can be tested at vehiclelevel using a standards-compliant system from Rohde & Schwarz and HEAD acoustics. Vehicle level testing can be conducted in an anechoic chamber with the addition of a power amplifier.
NG eCall test solutions from Rohde & Schwarz cover the entire ecosystem, from chipsets, modulesand TCUs to vehicle level testing. Enabling consistent testing in a controlled environment and ensure compliance with relevant specifications and standards. This enables you to minimize your investment, meet regulatory obligations and accelerate Next Generation eCall time to market.
